Puro Mangkunegaran is one of the two Javanese kingdoms in the city of Surakarta
(Java – Indonesia) and commemorates its 250 th anniversary.
To celebrate this, the royal court dancers are visiting Europe with 25 dancers and musicians to present ancient classical court dances including, a rare mask dance performed by women, a dance of the royal clown servants and contemporary work inspired by tradition.
The costumes will be designed by the internationally-known batik master Irwan Tirta. The flamboyant Prince Gusti Pangeran Herwasto Kusumo is leading the royal court dancers and he has given the Mangkunegaran Palace its reputation of a centre of classical Javanese performing arts as well as encouraging innovation and artistic creation in the contemporary Indonesian arts scene.
